故事銜接在原作的「天空競技場篇」之後。小傑與奇犽搭乘前往鯨魚島的船隻時意外遭遇海難,漂流至一個名為「秘寶島」的神祕島嶼。混亂中兩人走散,只能各自行動並在探索途中尋找彼此。島上佈滿古代遺跡、奇異魔獸與未知的構造物,小傑、奇犽、酷拉皮卡與雷歐力必須分頭深入島嶼的不同區域,逐步揭開島上隱藏的秘密與「禁斷秘寶」的真相。劇情雖非漫畫原著情節,但原作角色間的互動與冒險氛圍依然鮮明,並且加入全新的原創角色——卡片獵人「奧格(Ogh)」——讓故事更加完整。
在玩法上,是典型的橫向探索動作遊戲。操作小傑、奇犽、酷拉皮卡與雷歐力四名角色,每個人都有獨特的能力與操作手感,並且能依冒險進度自由切換,利用各角色特性突破不同地形。小傑擅長近身攻擊與平衡發展,是最易上手的角色;奇犽的速度極快,跳躍與移動十分靈活;酷拉皮卡擁有鎖鏈能力,能攻擊遠處或開啟特殊機關,也能利用念能力進行特殊動作,使他能前往其他角色到不了的區域;雷歐力的攻擊雖未必最出色,但擁有高耐力,能在危險地形中維持穩定發揮。四人皆具備等級設定,透過擊敗敵人來提升能力,使探索過程具有成長與回饋感。

“Hunter × Hunter: Kindan no Hihou” (Hunter × Hunter: Forbidden Treasure) is the second Hunter x Hunter title released for the Game Boy Color, launching on April 12, 2001 and developed and published by Konami. Unlike the previous game—which focused on strategy and RPG elements—this installment shifts dramatically into a side-scrolling, exploration-based action style reminiscent of Castlevania and Metroid. Despite the genre change, the game retains the atmosphere, characters, and core concepts of the original series, blending action gameplay with the unique charm of the Hunter universe.
The story takes place immediately after the Sky Arena arc. While traveling back to Whale Island, Gon and Killua’s ship is caught in a disaster, leaving them stranded on a mysterious island known as Treasure Island. In the chaos, the two become separated. As they navigate the island’s ancient ruins, strange beasts, and labyrinthine environments, Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio must each explore different areas, reunite with one another, and uncover the secrets behind the island’s “forbidden treasure.” The plot is an original side story, but it preserves the spirit and tone of the manga, including interactions among the main cast and the introduction of an exclusive character, the card hunter Ougu, who expands the game’s narrative threads.
Gameplay centers on action and exploration. The player can switch between four main characters—Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio—each with their own strengths, movement styles, and unique abilities. Gon is balanced and easy to control, Killua excels in speed and agility, Leorio offers durability, and Kurapika uses his chains to attack from a distance or activate mechanisms that allow access to areas the others cannot reach. Each character has a leveling system, growing stronger through combat and enabling deeper exploration as the adventure progresses.
Nen plays an important role and functions similarly to a magic system. It can be used for offensive techniques, healing, or solving event-related puzzles. Each character’s Nen abilities differ, adding variety to combat and exploration. Enemies include both original creatures created for the game and beasts directly pulled from the manga, helping to maintain the worldbuilding of the Hunter universe even within this Metroidvania-style structure.
Treasure Island itself is expansive, featuring a wide range of environments including castle interiors, underground waterways, forests, outdoor cliffs, and interconnected ruins. The map design, hidden paths, and layered structure show a strong influence from classic exploration-action titles. One of the game’s standout qualities is its boss battles—many of the boss monsters are massive, especially impressive given the Game Boy Color’s hardware limitations, giving the adventure a sense of scale rarely seen on the platform.
Beyond the main adventure, the game includes a competitive versus mode in which two players race against each other to collect the most treasure within a time limit. The winner receives items through a roulette reward system. More characters and stages become available in this mode as players progress through the main story, adding replay value.
Despite the constraints of the GBC, Hunter × Hunter: Kindan no Hihou was praised for its ambitious map design, satisfying action mechanics, and faithful interpretation of the characters and world. Its blend of fast-paced combat, exploration, character switching, and massive boss encounters earned it a positive reception among fans, and it is still remembered as one of the most engaging and well-crafted Hunter x Hunter adaptations released on classic handheld consoles.
