1989 年於紅白機(FC)推出的《創世紀:往聖者的道路》(Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar),是經典西方 RPG 系列《創世紀》(Ultima)中最具哲學性的一作,也是少數真正將「道德系統」放在核心的角色扮演遊戲。

本作在 RPG 歷史中具有極高地位,因為它徹底打破傳統「打倒魔王、拯救世界」的框架,改為要求玩家追求精神與人格上的昇華。

故事背景設定在邪惡勢力被擊敗之後的不列顛尼亞(Britannia)世界,國王認為人民在和平時代仍需要精神指引,因此召喚異世界的旅人,尋找能夠實踐「八大美德」的人,並最終成為「化身(Avatar)」。

目標並不是擊敗某個最終魔王,而是透過自身行為逐步體現八種美德,包括真誠、憐憫、英勇、公正、犧牲、榮譽、靈性與謙遜。這些美德並非單純的數值,而是直接與玩家在遊戲中的每一個選擇綁定。

例如,是否在戰鬥中放過逃跑的敵人會影響憐憫,是否偷取財物會影響公正,是否幫助他人則會提升相關美德。這種設計讓遊戲中的「好與壞」不再只是劇情選項,而是長期累積的行為結果。

在系統設計上,延續系列一貫的開放世界探索模式。需要在城鎮中與 NPC 互動,透過輸入或選擇關鍵字來獲取情報,並逐步拼湊出世界的真相。雖然 FC 版對輸入系統進行簡化,但仍保留高度的資訊依賴與探索感。

戰鬥方面採用俯瞰視角的隊伍戰術模式,可以同時指揮多達八名角色,在小型戰場上進行移動與攻擊,強調站位與策略,而非單純數值對決。這種設計在當時的家用機 RPG 中相當少見。

FC 版本為了適應主機玩家,對原作進行視覺與音樂的調整,使整體風格更偏向日式 RPG 的表現方式,角色造型也更加可愛化,音樂則由後藤次利重新編曲,增強史詩感與敘事氛圍。

整體評價方面,被視為 FC 平台上最具代表性的歐美 RPG 移植作品之一。它的難度與自由度極高,不會給予明確指引,必須自行記錄資訊、規劃路線,甚至反思自身行為是否符合「理想人格」。

Released in 1989 on the Famicom (FC), Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is one of the most philosophically significant entries in the classic Western RPG series Ultima (series). It is also one of the rare role-playing games that places a fully realized moral system at the very core of its design.

 

The game holds an extremely important position in RPG history because it breaks away from the traditional “defeat the evil overlord and save the world” framework. Instead, it asks the player to pursue spiritual growth and moral enlightenment.

The story is set in the world of Britannia after the forces of evil have already been defeated. Believing that peace alone is not enough, the King summons a stranger from another world to find someone capable of embodying the “Eight Virtues,” who will ultimately become the Avatar.

Rather than defeating a final villain, the player’s goal is to gradually embody eight virtues through their actions: Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility. These virtues are not simple statistics but are directly tied to every decision made in the game.

For example, sparing fleeing enemies in battle affects Compassion, stealing affects Justice, and helping others strengthens related virtues. This design makes “good and evil” not just narrative choices, but long-term behavioral consequences shaped by the player’s conduct throughout the entire journey.

In terms of systems, the game continues the series’ open-world exploration style. Players interact with NPCs in towns by selecting or inputting keywords to gather information and gradually piece together the truth of the world. Although the FC version simplifies the input system, it still preserves a strong sense of discovery and information-driven progression.

Combat uses a top-down tactical system where up to eight party members can be controlled simultaneously on small battlefields. Positioning and strategy are emphasized over raw statistics, which was relatively uncommon for console RPGs at the time.

The FC version also adapts the original PC game for home console audiences by adjusting visuals and music. The overall presentation leans more toward Japanese RPG aesthetics, with more stylized character designs, while the soundtrack—rearranged by Tsugutoshi Gotō—enhances the epic tone and narrative atmosphere.

In terms of reception, the game is widely regarded as one of the most important Western RPG ports on the FC platform. Its difficulty and freedom are both extremely high; it provides little direct guidance, requiring players to take notes, map their progress, and even reflect on whether their actions align with an ideal moral character.

At a time when most RPGs were still centered on leveling up and defeating monsters, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar posed a deeper question: does true heroism come from strength, or from choice and character?

Ultimately, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is not just a game, but a test of what it means to become a human being.
