The Famicom (FC/NES) version of Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished – The Final Chapter was released on May 25, 1990 by Victor Musical Industries. Although it was originally developed for the PC-88 platform, this console adaptation features notable differences in gameplay feel and system design, resulting in a distinctly different experience from the original version.
The story continues directly from the events of Ys I. The red-haired adventurer Adol Christin, after collecting the six sacred Books of Ys, is transported to the legendary floating land of Ys. Upon arriving, he is rescued in the village of Lance by a young girl named Lilia, marking the beginning of a new journey. As the narrative unfolds, Adol must locate the descendants of the six priests and uncover the mystery of the Black Pearl. His quest ultimately leads him deep into the massive Solomon Shrine, where he faces the final boss, Darm, in a battle to restore peace and return the land of Ys to the earth.
To accommodate the limitations and characteristics of home consoles, the Famicom version introduces several major adjustments to gameplay systems. One of the most noticeable changes is the significantly increased movement speed, which greatly reduces travel time and creates a faster overall pace. The signature bump combat system is also refined, offering smoother collision detection and more responsive interactions. However, due to the nature of the system, certain exploitable behaviors exist, such as defeating enemies safely by positioning against walls, which can unintentionally lower the game’s difficulty.
The magic system, a defining feature of Ys II, is retained and plays a crucial role in both combat and exploration.
