Super Robot Wars COMPACT 3 (スーパーロボット大戦COMPACT3) is the fifth and final installment of the COMPACT series on the WonderSwan platform. As the series’ concluding title, it introduced several new and relatively obscure works, including Gasshin Sentai Mekander Robo, Akubanch: The Legend of the Dark, The Vision of Escaflowne, and Betaman, offering players a fresh and unexpected lineup of participating series. Additionally, New Story of Aura Battler DUNBINE—which had previously only appeared as hidden elements—was fully integrated into the story, providing a more complete representation of the original work.

In terms of plot, the game continues the COMPACT series’ tradition of featuring original factions, with the “Shura” organization inspired by Fist of the North Star. While the homage is evident, the characters gained notable popularity, with some even named after the Big Dipper constellation. The original protagonist, Shura warrior Folka Alberk (フォルカ·アルバーク), is exceptionally powerful, essentially capable of soloing the game. His main unit, Yaldabaoth, combines close-range high-damage finishing attacks with cost-effective long-range strikes, blending real-type mobility with super-type HP and defense. From early stages to the finale, Yaldabaoth remains the army’s ace. Its upgraded form, Yaldabaoth “Divine” (神化), unlocked mid-game, gains flight and minor EN regeneration, further increasing battlefield endurance and solidifying its position as the strongest unit in the game.

The game system removed the traditional COMPACT series “Personal Data Table” and instead allowed pilots to be trained using PP earned in battles during Intermission. To boost PP acquisition, the new mental commands “Training” and “Instruction” were introduced; the former applies to oneself, while the latter benefits any ally. Unlike previous entries, the game does not include space maps and only features land, sea, and air terrains, likely influenced by the inclusion of The Vision of Escaflowne.

In combat and presentation, COMPACT 3 stands out. Both pilots and units have dynamic cut-ins, contrasting with the static cut-ins of the contemporaneous Super Robot Wars D. Even lesser-known characters and units, such as Tokamak, Zelana, and Dro from DUNBINE, are represented. Dynamic unit effects that were absent in the GBA era, like character animations in Betaman, appear for the first time. The series’ trademark high-quality BGM continues, with a focus on tracks appealing to core fans. Theme songs like “Yakusoku wa Iranai” (Escaflowne), “Yume no Hunter” (Akubanch), and “Chin-Requiem” (Betaman) are included, alongside original compositions such as Folka’s and rival Fernando’s themes. PCM-based character voice samples are widely used, featuring high-quality recordings of iconic shouts, e.g., “Zet!” in Mazinger Z and “Try Attack!” in Mekander Robo.

However, the game also has balance and system design issues. The original protagonist’s overwhelming power and abundant suitable combat commands make soloing the game trivial. For licensed works, DUNBINE and Escaflowne’s worlds are presented in isolation, with frequent inter-dimensional jumps leading to fragmented storytelling. Mekander Robo, Betaman, and Akubanch appear late or receive minimal narrative focus, resulting in incomplete representation of their source material. Some units, like Escaflowne, have low armor and evasion early on, while command limitations hinder usability. Mekander Robo’s high attack but low accuracy necessitates mental command support, and Akubanch arrives too late to contribute effectively.

System-wise, weapon upgrades shifted from individual to batch upgrades, but melee units remain favored over ranged units due to mobility and special abilities. Although PP training can enhance pilot abilities, the high PP cost and heavy SP consumption for commands limit actual improvements. Hidden units are few, and no second-playthrough carryover exists, restricting replay value.

On the market, the game is extremely rare, with only 15,000 copies produced, making it a coveted collector’s item with high resale prices. Although its release coincided with Super Robot Wars D, which overshadowed it, the unexpected and unconventional selection of participating series generated discussion. Its animated cut-ins, refined BGM, and original faction design have been praised, earning it a reputation as a hidden gem within the COMPACT series. Despite some flaws in story and balance, it remains a worthwhile experience for fans. Some original characters and units later appeared in the additional scenario OG2.5 and its full version OG Gaiden in the OGS series, extending their influence.

In summary, Super Robot Wars COMPACT 3 combines a unique lineup of rarely-seen series, detailed animated presentation, and high-quality music. While it suffers from balance and story issues, its BGM, dynamic cut-ins, and original characters leave a lasting impression. As the final COMPACT series entry and Banpresto’s last WonderSwan title, its uniqueness and rarity make it a must-play classic for series enthusiasts.
