One Piece: Grand Battle Swan Colosseum is an action fighting game developed by Dimps and released by Bandai in 2002 for the WonderSwan Color. As a handheld spin-off of the home-console Grand Battle! series, it condenses the heated, chaotic, and comedic combat style of One Piece into a fully 2D portable experience. Despite hardware limitations that restrict the game to 2D character sprites and environments, the developers successfully crafted a fast-paced and satisfying battle system, making it one of the most notable manga-adapted games on the WonderSwan platform.
The game’s story draws almost entirely from the Arabasta Saga. From the entrance of the Grand Line to the final conflict in the Kingdom of Alabasta, the game presents these events through an Event Battle mode that mixes short cutscenes with combat. Players follow the storyline in sequence, facing different characters as they appear in the original arc. Interactions such as Zoro’s encounter with Tashigi, Luffy’s deadly clash with Crocodile, and the Straw Hats’ confrontation with the Marines are reenacted through mini-dialogues and battles, allowing handheld players to immerse themselves in the pacing of the anime’s narrative.
Midway through, the game includes one of the saga’s iconic comedic moments—a Kung-Fu Dugong challenge, a halftime mini-game where players must defeat as many Dugongs as possible within the time limit. After clearing all seven event battles, each character receives a unique ending line before the credits roll, completing the story experience.
Although the game uses 2D graphics, movement freedom is surprisingly high. Characters can walk, run, jump, double-jump, block, and pick up items such as barrels, crates, and treasure-chest drops to use in combat. These items are classified into instant-effect status enhancers or throwable attack items. Background elements, items, and NPC cameos reflect the original manga and anime faithfully, giving each stage a sense of narrative identity.
Each character has around ten standard techniques plus special attacks activated through an energy system. The "Bombstock" gauge is divided into three tiers; landing attacks—even when blocked—fills the gauge, allowing one-, two-, or three-level Finisher moves. This system preserves the dynamic and exhilarating feel of the home-console Grand Battle! titles, despite being on a handheld device.
When a Finisher is activated, a stylish animation cut-in appears, recreating iconic moments—for example, Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Gatling comes with a dramatic illustrated frame. Controls are intentionally simplified so that even players inexperienced with action games can easily perform flashy moves, contributing to the game's popularity.
There are thirteen playable characters. At first, only the six core members of the Straw Hat crew are available. As players progress, key heroes and villains from the Arabasta arc become unlockable, including Crocodile, Mr. 1, Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, Smoker, Tashigi, and even Ace. Each character includes two costumes: the default outfit and an alternate-color version.
The game features ten battle stages, all based on iconic locations from the Arabasta Saga—Whisky Peak, Little Garden, Drum Castle, Alabasta Royal Palace, the Clocktower, and even Marine Headquarters. While stage layouts do not differ dramatically, their visuals and background characters bring richness to the handheld’s limited display.
Beyond Event Mode and Free Battle, the game features a deep collectible and progression-based Wanted Poster (Treasure) system. By completing specific conditions, players unlock wanted posters for numerous characters—ranging from the Straw Hat crew and Baroque Works agents to Kingdom soldiers, the Revolutionary Army, and even the Red-Haired Pirates. These posters can unlock new characters, stages, and even special attacks, giving players continuous motivation to replay content.
Notably, the game supports WonderSwan’s link-cable multiplayer. Players can form tag teams for cooperative battles, with certain combinations granting stat boosts or penalties. Winning battles increases a character’s bounty (battle points), adding a competitive element to multiplayer engagements. For a handheld console of that era, such a complete multiplayer and progression system was remarkably advanced.
Upon release, Swan Colosseum received highly positive feedback within the WonderSwan community. Players widely considered it one of the most polished action fighting games on the platform. While the 2D graphics were necessarily simplified compared to the console versions, the developers succeeded in preserving the franchise’s signature impact, combo flow, and character charm. Cut-in illustrations and Finisher visuals surprised fans and helped compensate for the handheld’s technical limitations.
Critics and players generally agreed that although the game cannot match the scale of its console counterparts, it delivers an impressively ambitious experience for a handheld title. Its character authenticity, battle tempo, growth system, collectibles, and multiplayer functions were all praised for exceeding hardware expectations. Its few drawbacks include limited stage interaction and reduced move variety compared to home-console versions. Even so, it remains one of the standout entries in the Grand Battle! series and a representative title of the WonderSwan library.
