This game has gone down in legend as one of the most infamously difficult titles ever created, often cited as one of the “Four Kusoge of the Famicom,” yet precisely because of its punishing difficulty, it has achieved a cult status among retro gamers, remembered as a uniquely brutal challenge.

 

Originally intended as a tie-in to the 1986 Transformers animated movie, the game instead became a nightmare for many young players. Visually, the protagonist is Ultra Magnus rather than Convoy, contrary to the title. The enemy bullets are tiny, white, and nearly invisible against the pale backgrounds, adding immense visual strain. The music loops monotonously, and combined with frequent death sound effects, it quickly fatigues the player. Collision detection is chaotic: despite the protagonist’s massive size, even a pixel-sized bullet can instantly destroy him, creating frequent, sudden deaths.

The story is set in 2005, following the mysterious disappearance of Autobots leader Convoy. Players take control of Ultra Magnus to investigate, traversing ruined Earth landscapes, alien bases, and even space while confronting Decepticon forces led by Megatron or Galvatron. The game features ten punishing levels, with the ultimate goal of unraveling the “Mystery of Convoy” and defeating the final boss to protect the Autobots’ fate.

Gameplay pushes difficulty to the extreme. Players can switch between robot and truck forms, yet the truck is small, cannot shoot upward, and has poor jumping ability. The brief stiffness during transformations often makes the player an easy target. There is almost no invincibility, and enemies appear suddenly from screen edges, causing instant deaths. Boss weak points are tiny and attack patterns unpredictable. Collecting the hidden letters “R-O-D-I-M-U-S” allows transformation into Rodimus Prime, but even then, bullets still kill in one hit. Every mechanic in the game is designed to punish the player relentlessly.

Critically, Mystery of Convoy received almost universal negative feedback for its unbalanced and frustrating design, yet it has endured as a cult classic. Commentators have dubbed it the “three-second death game,” and over the years, videos of streamers’ breakdowns on platforms like NicoNico and YouTube have revived its notoriety. The game serves as both a cautionary tale of poor design and a predecessor that made its sequel, Transformers: The Headmasters, far more polished.
