Released in 1992 for the Super Famicom (SFC), Super Valis: Akaki Tsuki no Otome is a rather unique entry in the Valis series. Despite the “Super” in its title, it is not an entirely new sequel, but instead a heavily modified and streamlined SFC-exclusive version of Valis IV, originally released on the PC Engine.

The story continues the overarching narrative of the series. After the legendary warrior Yuko Asou steps down, a new crisis emerges in the Dream World. An evil force known as Galgear seeks to harness the power of the Crimson Moon to dominate the three realms. The responsibility of stopping this threat falls upon Lena, Yuko’s successor. Wielding the sacred Valis sword, she takes on the mantle of the new Valis warrior and sets out, alongside her allies, to confront the forces of darkness.

Compared to the PC Engine version, the SFC release introduces major system changes. The original allowed players to switch freely between three characters, but this version limits gameplay to Lena alone, with the other characters appearing only during story scenes. In place of character switching, the game features an equipment and magic selection system. By collecting items throughout the stages, players can change armor and gain access to different attack types, such as homing shots or wide-range attacks, which adds a layer of strategy to combat. Lena also gains a sliding move, improving mobility and making both traversal and combat feel faster and more dynamic. Overall, the simplification of systems results in a more linear and accessible gameplay experience.
