It is a traditional fantasy role-playing game that, unlike many contemporaneous RPGs chasing flashy effects, strives to faithfully recreate the grounded, “Dungeons & Dragons”-style tabletop feel ofRecord of Lodoss War, making it a hardline classic from the late 16-bit era.
Released near the end of the Super Famicom’s lifecycle, when 32-bit consoles like the PlayStation and Sega Saturn were already rising, the game exhibits a mature and polished presentation in both visuals and systems. It is a strategy RPG combining tactical movement with turn-based commands. Unlike typical linear RPGs, the story is structured in multiple chapters, allowing players to experience the history and adventures of the cursed island of Lodoss from various perspectives and points in time.
The story closely follows the original novel and OVA, beginning with the legendary war between the Hero King Mayson and the Demon God, then moving into the well-known Parn chapter. Players control the young freelance knight Parn, journeying alongside companions such as the elf Deedlit, the priest Eto, and the mage Slayn. The central conflict revolves around the manipulative Gray Witch Kara and the Mammon Empire’s ambition to conquer the island. The narrative faithfully recreates key scenes from the source material and adds extensive character dialogue, allowing even players unfamiliar with the original works to feel the epic fantasy atmosphere.
Gameplay uses a top-down view for towns and the overworld map, switching to small tactical grids of 3x3 or 4x4 squares during battles. Players command each character to move, attack, or cast spells, with positioning and formation being crucial. Movement distance affects attack success, and spellcasting has distinct casting times and ranges—Slayn’s offensive magic and Deedlit’s elven spells are both carefully designed. The game is challenging, with intelligent enemy AI that can wipe out the party if players neglect healing or equipment management. Notably, characters automatically restore HP and MP upon leveling up, a player-friendly design that reduces repetitive backtracking to towns for supplies.
