This 1987 Star Wars game, released exclusively for the Famicom by Namco, has gone down in gaming history as a “legendary outlier.” While it carried the official license, its wildly creative design and unusual liberties made it one of the most talked-about titles in the FC library.

The game launched on December 4, 1987, and was never officially released on the North American NES. It combined side-scrolling action with first-person shooting segments set in 3D space, delivered on a 2M-bit cartridge.

The storyline loosely follows Star Wars: A New Hope but adds a heavy dose of original “Namco-style” twists. Players control Luke Skywalker, piloting the Millennium Falcon across multiple planets to rescue imprisoned allies like R2-D2, C-3PO, and Han Solo. The game features locations both canonical and original, such as Tatooine, Kessel, and Ise. After rescuing all allies, players confront the Death Star in the final mission. True to Namco’s eccentric style, Darth Vader often transforms into bizarre monsters like scorpions, dinosaurs, or squids, and several levels include wildly imaginative, non-film settings.

Gameplay mechanics were surprisingly rich for the time. The D-pad controls movement, crouching, and portal navigation. The A button handles jumping—with height dependent on press duration—while the B button is used for lightsaber attacks. The Start button opens the Force Menu, allowing players to deploy special abilities, which are powered by collecting “Power Diamonds” scattered across levels. These abilities include Speed (faster running and longer jumps), Shield (temporary invincibility), Jump (high leap for tricky obstacles), and Nova (screen-clearing attack).

 

Reception was mixed but notable. On the positive side, the game impressed with vibrant visuals and music, including Namco’s rendition of John Williams’s iconic score. Levels were highly varied, combining platforming, combat, and 3D space shooting sequences. On the negative side, the game’s difficulty was notorious; enemies respawn quickly, jump mechanics were unforgiving, and one-hit deaths without a Force shield made it brutal even for experienced players. Moreover, its story and design deviated sharply from the films, unsettling hardcore Star Wars fans with elements like Luke having dark hair and bizarre planets.

Despite—or perhaps because of—its eccentricities, this version has become highly sought after among collectors, especially outside Japan, where it was never released. Hidden secrets reward dedicated players; for instance, rescuing all allies results in them helping protect Luke during the Death Star finale, one of the few genuinely heartwarming moments in this notoriously hardcore Famicom title.
